Liz Smithers is the #girlboss, beauty and brains behind Laka Living. She lives in a treehouse on the Garden Isle (aka Kauai) and thrives on the highly potent pantry staples she creates (think tonic butters, matcha and plant-based protein powders). Thankfully for us, she's sharing them with the world.
Through these low-glycemic, high protein, bioavailable nut-based butters (think coconut, macadamia and cashew), nutrients are easily carried through your bloodstream, tissue and joints. The butters are slowly processed via stone grinding to allow the butter to develop shelf stability and allow for maximum absorption of all the added goods such as Shatavari root, chaga and cordyceps mushroom, and tocotrienols.
Below, I talk to Liz about Laka Living, her daily rituals and inspiration, and more.
For those who are unclear, what in the world ARE adaptogens?
Adaptogens are a class of super-plants (herbs) that basically go into our body and enhance or revitalize systems that are out of balance. They can regulate under active systems and overactive systems, making them perfect for those with thyroid, autoimmune and stress issues. They also are totally non-toxic and can be consumed every day, unlike other categories of herbs.
How did you come up with the recipes for the beauty butters?
I started experimenting with adaptogens about four years ago via my acupuncturist at the time. Soon after I started noticing adaptogen-specific companies popping up. Although I enjoy making tonics, I realized not many people will discipline themselves to getting into the habit of regular consumption of these plants. I also found, through personal experience, how starved society was of fat! Adaptogens are easily carried into the body via sugar or fat so I chose fat to blend with them for a convenient, delicious way to dose up on the good stuff!
How has Hawaii inspired Laka Living?
Hawaii is a place that has allowed me to be quiet. I craved silence for so, so long....avidly practicing and hanging at my Richmond yoga studio as much as possible. I think I deeply craved silence so I could tap into creativity. There is so much vibration in Hawaii, once I was given the smallest opportunity to orchestrate a quieter life, ideas started busting through the woodworks. There’s always tons of energies in motion here—it’s a pretty profound place.
What are some of your favorite ways to use the nut butters? Do you use them for specific results or just as an everyday essential?
I mostly eat by the spoonful for my breakfast! I know I should have better ideas than that but it’s truly my favorite way to eat them. I like to keep my mornings simple, I’m usually teaching yoga from 6-10am so a good dose of Shroom Butter and a matcha latte spiked with the Super Root Butter is my go to!
I definitely use them as an everyday essential, again mostly during the mornings to curb my appetite but provide my body with ample amounts of slow digesting energy laced with magic! It’s like my morning ritual....somehow I’m not sick of the butters yet!
For those who enjoy making face masks, the Super Root Butter is a wonderful facial moisturizer for homemade face masks or a deep lotion! Mix with your favorite body oil and/or body lotion for deep nourishment.
What are some other habits/rituals that keep you at your best?
Sleep + Sunshine + Sweat + Sex! Without these four, I am convinced we lose our very human essence. I am so stoked on my nine hours of sleep a night especially! I wish I could have given everyone sleep for Christmas. I love waking up so well rested, with clear skin, ready to teach consciousness through yoga instruction and building Laka Living. This is also why I’m no fun to go out with though, ha!
